How can I Donate?
Lonely, destitute, homeless and abandoned - You can make a difference!
The Story of Mary
In the early eighties I met my future husband, we married and had four wonderful children. Our marriage unfortunately broke down when I was only thirty-two and I found myself divorced with four young children to bring up.
I took on what work I could get with no financial help from their father. Due to the type of work I was forced to take up, in order to also look after my children, I never had access to any superannuation.
The kids left home to start their lives and families and have struggles of their own. I was left on my own to cope with finding accommodation and work and because of rising rents needing to move a number of times, sometimes renting a single room or granny flat.
In my late 40’s I had a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with PTSD and depression, which I still struggle with today. Now in my late fifties I am on a Newstart Allowance with no extra payments. I live a very long walk from town and of course keeping a car on the road is impossible, so I rely on others for the occasional transport I need to visit doctors or to simply buy groceries. The rising cost of fresh meat and veggies makes surviving on my minimal budget, after paying rent, extremely hard.
With no assets or cash reserves, even after working hard for many years, I am fearful for what the future holds for me.
